Drawing with MS Word 2007 – 2010

  •   Open a Microsoft Word document
  •  To insert a shape or a group of shapes, go to “insert” then “insert shapes” click onto a shape, then click onto the page.

Insert Shapes


  • Click on an object (the shapes) and notice the “Format” tab appears on the top of the screen.  Along the ribbon you will see “Shape fill”, “shape outline,” “shape effects”. Explore these tabs to change colour, gradients, lines, line weights, textures, patterns

Shapes with attributes


  • Along the ribbon is the “send forward” and “send back tabs.  The first object drawn is on the bottom or at the back of the group of shapes to alter the combination, click onto the object to be moved click onto the “send forward” or “send back”
  • Send shapes forward
  • To rotate a shape, go to the “Rotate” tab or click onto the green rotating handle that maybe attached to the shape.

To group all your objects into one bigger object click onto an object, hold down shift and click onto the other objects that you would like to group together. Go to “Format” then “Group” The picture below was drawn with the three basic shapes above.

  Word 2003

Open a Word 2003 document.  Click where you want to create a drawing.  Click the “Insert” menu. Select a shape or drawing tool you want to use from the Drawing toolbar. For more information on drawing with MS Word 2003 vis it the link  below.
